The Word From Up Top

October 22nd, 2023 + 2:10 AM  ·  TonightsLastSong

I am composing some stuff for an indie video game project, so this is for that, and there are horns. For over a decade I have felt creatively threatened by the bonkers Final Fantasy X-2 soundtrack, which went into some sort of jazzy horn-filled world tour between standard favorites.  i.e., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BelUq2-6RP4&t=790s

I'm building these in separate layered files so that the game can control which layers are on, but I rendered this mp3 in 2 full loops since one loop is like ~1:20.  The back half is just more of the same.

Just grooving!  If you have any horn pro tips, or favorite samples, let me know!

Blackfrost

May 20th, 2023 + 1:05 AM  ·  TonightsLastSong

Hi friends! Life takes me on a ride every couple of years but it's hard to forget the amp.  It makes me glad to see inevitable new music posted here.

Tbh I don't know who my music is for, but honk if you like it!  I write fantasy & sci-fi on the side sometimes.  For the creative music, I tend to pick some sort of motif in a story's album.  So, this story uses excessive reverb and irregularity in the drums, channeling something about the unrelenting nighttime rain in this story universe.  The rain is basically its own character in the story, and always audible, and overwhelming out in the open.  It's a highly opinionated style choice, but there it is!  Consider it the creative constraint!

In the story, blackfrost is the fictional concept of something magically alive but physically dead.  The handy example is a rare flower petrified by magic rot, and very brittle.  It represents unresolved possibility, and "Blackfrost" becomes a banner name of a few rivals working together.

Songs like these are sort of like poetry to me, I don't really know what they are, but I like sifting story from them.  I think this song is about setting out on a dangerous open road, meeting fierce challenge, and securing a little bit more future for the blackfrost allies.  The accomplishment proves something optimistic, that the blackfrost allies are not only less brittle than a blackfrost flower, but that they might be something pretty fierce, so watch out yall

Admin help with account details

Could I get someone's help in deleting the links on my profile? The delete buttons seem broken and editing just adds a new link instead.  I'd like to clear the section out for personal reasons.

Relatedly, patching up that delete button would be nice

Thanks!

Jagged Road in the Sky

March 7th, 2018 + 4:03 PM  ·  TonightsLastSong

Here's a short casual track connected to the others.  I haven't really been representing the "3 minutes of just relax" category very well.  Not everything I make is quite as uppity as what I've been uploading over the last year.

The name for this comes from the story world's setting, where it's night all the time and there are no stars, and instead the sky is blanketed with a station grid of rectangular orbital spotlights.  Lots of them are burned out, blacking out some areas and making angular constellations out of what's left.  One long stretch of still-working lights makes a big "road" that points in the direction of home.

Enjoy!
